Colonel John’s Walk
2009: The Travers 140th Running, Saratoga
After saddling in Saratoga’s paddock every runner must walk this peaceful, leafy path to the racetrack. Lined on both sides with ardent fans and veteran handicappers this slender chute forces the riders into single-file and provides a last look as they make their way to the starting gate. As these two beautiful horses and their riders walked to the track for the 139th running of Saratoga’s Travers Stakes, it was not at all evident that less than an inch would separate them at the finish. Jockey Garrett Gomez on WinStar Farm’s Colonel John held off the hard-charging Mambo in Seattle in a duel that had 40,723 people standing at their seats. It was the perfect August day and the perfect Travers race.
This is the 24th poster in the longest-running series of its kind. The 2009 Travers poster (and the Saratoga version) are available after June 6, 2009 on this web site and at selected stores and galleries in Saratoga Springs. See you at the track.

A word of thanks for my long-time friend and partner, Paula Rosenberg. Paula is the photographer who took the striking image of Colonel John and his entourage on which this year’s poster art is based. Camera in hand, Paula covers the track looking for new angles, overlooked elegance and great compositions. And, she usually finds them. Thanks Paula, great image.
